Misconduct investigations involving three suspended Peel Regional Police officers connected to Project South have been opened but postponed because of related criminal proceedings, Ontario’s Law Enforcement Complaints Agency has confirmed. The wider corruption investigation has also been linked to at least three shootings at Brampton homes.

The Pointer reported that the agency, known as LECA, confirmed the status of the investigations in a written response. It declined to discuss details, citing confidentiality requirements under Section 145 of Ontario’s Community Safety and Policing Act.

“Our investigation has been postponed pursuant to section 163 of the CSPA due to related criminal proceedings,” a LECA spokesperson told The Pointer in writing.

The agency said it would reassess its next investigative steps as the criminal proceedings advance and circumstances allow. Its confirmation concerns possible misconduct; it does not establish that any of the three Peel officers committed a criminal offence.

Questions about Peel officers remain unanswered

The Pointer attributed its reporting on the three officers’ suspensions to sources. Peel police have not provided details about the officers or explained their possible connections to Project South.

The publication has asked Peel police whether the officers are being investigated for possible criminal activity, whether they remain off duty and whether the force has contacted the Attorney General’s office about potential effects on criminal cases involving them.

York Regional Police declined to provide further information about the officers, saying Project South remains active. The force also said it could not comment on non-criminal matters being handled by Peel police.

Court documents obtained by The Pointer describe an alleged communication in December 2025 between one Peel constable and a Toronto police sergeant about an insurance fraud plan involving the constable’s vehicle. The fraud did not take place, and the source report says there is no allegation that the Peel constable agreed to participate.

Brampton shootings form part of wider probe

York Regional Police began Project South last summer. In February, seven Toronto police officers and a recently retired member were arrested and charged in the corruption and organized crime investigation. Another 19 suspects were also arrested.

The allegations include drug trafficking, criminal activity in the towing industry and an unsuccessful plot to kill a corrections officer. Some Toronto officers allegedly supplied information to an organized criminal network with international connections.

At the February announcement, York police showed footage of shootings across the Greater Toronto Area, including three at homes on Brampton residential streets.

LECA has previously said its conduct investigations will not interfere with criminal investigations or prosecutions. The agency also said opening a conduct investigation does not prevent members of the public from filing a related complaint.
