Peel Regional Police have arrested a Scarborough man in connection with a fatal shooting in Brampton last month, but investigators are still searching for two additional suspects they describe as armed and dangerous.
Officers were called to the area of Sandalwood Parkway and Crown Victoria Drive just after 7 p.m. on June 4 after reports of gunfire, Peel Regional Police said. When they arrived, they found an adult male suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
The victim was identified as 38-year-old Jamal Edwards of Brampton. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Nearly seven weeks later, on July 21, investigators from the force's Homicide Bureau arrested 24-year-old Bakiram Balakumar of Scarborough. He was charged in connection with the shooting and held in custody pending a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice.
Police say the investigation is not over. Two additional suspects were captured on video and remain outstanding, and investigators are asking the public for help identifying them.
"They should be considered armed and dangerous," Peel Regional Police said in a news release. The force is urging residents not to approach the suspects and to call 911 immediately if they are seen.
Police have not released details about a possible motive or the relationship, if any, between the victim and the accused.
The shooting took place in a busy residential and commercial area near the intersection, steps from shopping plazas and transit routes that serve the surrounding Sandalwood neighbourhood.
Anyone with information about the incident, including the identities or whereabouts of the outstanding suspects, is asked to contact the Homicide Bureau at 905-453-2121, ext. 3205.
Balakumar remains before the courts. Under Canadian law, anyone facing criminal charges is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
